Course Information: This program will cover a wide range of battery topics and recent model code modifications in this fast-changing field. EV boost charging, manufacturing, storage (awaiting use), collection (used/damaged), In use (ESS, Personal Mobility Devices). The program will cover hazards, new code solutions for protection levels, and response considerations. Electronic Handouts.
Documents to be discussed: IFC, IBC, NEC, UL 9440, UL 9540A
Upon completion of the course, the attendee will:

  1. Understand the history of battery regulation in the model codes and the hazards addressed.
  2. Understand the difference between stationary standby battery systems versus energy storage systems.
  3. How Chapter 1 of the building code and fire code provides a path to newer language, not in current codes.
  4. Be informed of new storage requirements for lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries.
  5. Be informed on code language addressing battery-powered personal mobility to devices.
  6. Be aware of increased reliance on NFPA 855 and changes to that document.
  7. Be informed on new IBC Group assignments and Chapter 9 fire protection requirements.
  8. Provided with an understanding of the Arizona APS ESS event.
  9. Understand what should be submitted for ESS installations.
  10. Be informed on lessons learned during ESS permitting, review, and inspection activities.
  11. Be informed of new battery technologies being added to NFPA 855 and coming to market.

➢ Continuing Education Credit: Participants can earn a total of 6 CEUs for attending.

Fees: Include instruction, course materials, and break refreshments in morning and afternoon. Lunch will be provided and is covered in the fee. Preregistered participants will receive course materials. Course materials for participants that do not preregister will be distributed on a first come first served basis. The fee is $75 for current Chapter members and $125 for non-Chapter members.
